Lafarge’s
Edmonton Plant first produced concrete pipe
in 1972 under the name of SupercretePrecast Products when Supercrete
expanded its precast prestressing plant
from 27,000 to 70,000 square feet and added
‘packer head’ production equipment
to make dry cast concrete products to 96-inch
diameter. In 1985 a three-station “vibration
under pressure” machine, and a box
station were added to produce pipe and box
sections up to 120-inch.
Pipe and manhole joints gradually changed
from grooved spigots requiring wedge gaskets
and lube to offset spigots using self lubricated
gaskets. In the eighties Supercrete
was acquired by Lafarge.
In
2001 Lafarge demonstrated
its commitment to pipe operations in Western
Canada through reinvestment. In the first
decade of this century, Lafarge
is initiating major plant upgrades
by installing the best available vibration
method production machine, dedicated meter
concrete mixer, and new automatic steel
reinforcing welding machine at the Edmonton
plant. The results of these additions will
be increased efficiencies and faster production.
