Available
for over three centuries in North
America, reinforced concrete pipe remains
the product of choice for designers of buried
infrastructure projects. Since its first
use in 1842 for a sanitary sewer in Mohawk
New York, Precast concrete
pipe technology has continued to set the
standard for buried storm and sanitary pipe. Precast
concrete pipe was introduced in Western
Canada in the late 1940s/early 50s. The
first concrete pipe plant was established
by Supercrete in Winnipeg
serving markets in Manitoba, Saskatchewan
and NW Ontario. In 1972, Supercrete
expanded its precast
prestressing plant and installed equipment
to produce concrete pipe.
The production of
Precast concrete pipe in
Southern Alberta began in the early 1950s
when Carl Neilson and Chris Peterson established
StoyConcrete.
After the purchase of the Supercrete
and Stoy operations through
the 70s and 80s, Lafarge
plants now provide precast concrete pipe
and an assortment of drainage products throughout
Western Canada. Lafarge
is North
America's largest diversified supplier
of construction materials.
